The Carlton Commando was a kit car produced between 1983 and 1994.
It was introduced to the kit car scene at a time when Dutton were in their prime and doing well with their utility vehicle, the Dutton Sierra. The Commando did quite well too, like the Sierra. Several hundred were sold although they are becoming rarer now. The Commando was a big, rugged vehicle.
The car was based on a Ford Cortina (the Commando utilised the Cortina doors and windscreen). Generally the fibreglass work was quite poor with ripply lines and an overall tatty appearance. For added power the car could also be fitted with the Ford Cologne V6.
The Ford Cortina base made it practical and cheap to put together and maintain.
