The Matich A51 was constructed for Matich to contest the 1973 US Formula 5000 season.

The car was later sold to John Goss who rebuilt it as an A53 and used it to win the 1976 Australian Grand Prix. A second A51 monocoque was built but not raced.

Adelaide based driver John Briggs drove a 5 year old A51 to second place in the 1978 Australian Grand Prix, his steady drive proving decisive as some of the races established 'stars' either crashed or suffered mechanical failure.

Briggs finished the race two laps behind winner Graeme McRae in his self designed McRae GM3.
